Either You Suck Or It's Just Not a Match

Well, maybe the "suck" part, but then it would depend on the context and the man, I think. Telling someone you don't wish to play anymore is not rude though. Potentially awkward, yes. Rude, no.

I do find that some women can be unnecessarily harsh with men in a way that just makes me cringe and want to apologize for my gender. It's that whole pound of flesh thing. You can tell someone that you are not enjoying the play and that you wish to stop without unleashing the hounds of hyperbolic-ghetto-blasting-diva hell on some poor guy.

I would prefer, if limited to these choices, that someone fake a crash, play dumb or hide (temporarily) over continuing to cyber with someone they are not enjoying though. Really. What the hell are you doing otherwise?

I personally handle this particular problem a number of ways, the most common of which is that I just say, "Hey, you know what? I don't think we're a match." Different styles, choices, preferences, whatever, but not a match. Then, depending on whether I feel it is worth saying more, I might say something about how it was nice to meet, "thank you for asking me," "good thing we found out early and can move on to find something that suits us both better" and "enjoy your day," and then I excuse myself and leave. Then I open up the "Notes" tab on his profile and type "No" and a short line on why. And then I move on.

Here's an extremely generalized rule of thumb.

The Joe Wannafuckers who treat you like a game construct and approach you with random TPs or lines like "Wanna fuck" or "Get on your knees and suck me bitch," and then hop on a poseball and press the menu button like a manic lab rat on cocaine while not making any real effort to engage with you are not gonna lose one iota of momentum if you tell them they "suck at cyber" and you don't want to play anymore. Choosing to either stick with it until he is done or, God help you, repeatedly agreeing to have cybersex with him, or sending him an onslaught of continuous colorful criticism is a complete waste of time.

The Peter Pararoleplayers are another story. These guys are more sensitive. They're making an effort. I would ask that women handle them with a tad bit more consideration. That does not mean playing with them if you don't want to play with them. That does not mean faking your way through to an exit. You can say no in a firm and respectful manner. Again, I just say it's "not a match." That's not a criticism so much as it is a preference and a valid and honest one at that.

My main issue is with people who agree to cyber AGAIN and AGAIN out of what...some misguided sense of courtesy or obligation? Let's talk about that some more.

I will confess I have completed cybersex with someone I wasn't particularly enjoying, but usually only when I was well into it and could tell it had a reasonably short end time and it wasn't totally abhorrent. If I get started with someone who is clearly a multi-hour paraRPer, there is no way I'm going to roll with that until the end. Why give hours and hours of your life to some stranger when there is no benefit to you? And why perpetrate that kind of fraud on the other person? Cut bait for both of you so you can find better catches. But that's why I talk about a "cybersex sales cycle" and highlight the probing and listening and setting of expectations. The ideal scenario is not getting into that situation because you sorted it out up front.

Also, there's some pretty rough and bizarre stuff in Second Life and on the internet. If someone unwittingly gets into a cybersex situation where the roleplay is deeply disturbing and upsetting, then again, why keep doing it? Why do that to yourself? And for who? What's that about? Stop it.

Here's a thought. What if neither of you are enjoying the cybersex, but both of you stick with it until the other has "had their fun"?  Seriously.  Stop it.

Don't Lose The Thread

Jenni's Guide to Great Cybersex makes an excellent point about text cybersex roleplay. Try to pay attention to what is where in the "storyline." If your partner walks over to the hot tub, slips out of her clothes, sits on the edge and swings her long legs into the hot, bubbling water and beckons for you to join her, then it would behoove you not to pull the sheets back and expose her hardening nipples as you crawl into bed with her, know what I mean Vern?

This part of Jenni's advice just kills me...

...and mainly because:

a. It's necessary at all.
b. It's necessary enough to make a top ten list.
c. It made a top ten list in 1997 and is still relevant in 2011.

Ladies, and gentleman pretending to be ladies, what in God's name would motivate you to continue having cybersex with some random asshat in the ether that you do not enjoy? Step away from the keyboard and reflect on that before you hop on another poseball or feel a twinge of guilty obligation to a man who calls himself MasterT-RexDick387.

Don Mill, Male Avatar, On Cybering

I will start apologizing for the next few disconnected statements that came to mind after reading the last few pages of this thread. Having dozed off for less than 3 hours in a plane does wonders to my brain.

On cybering and the how-to:

I seem to be a person that can do it under two different scenarios. The most normal to me is to cyber with women that I am emotional related as a way of extending our relationship. These are the cases in which cybering becomes much more than texting and jumping into poseballs.

The second scenario, for me, has to do with the enjoyment of the roleplaying part of the cybering. It is never a means to seek " release" but rather a conversation that moves around the description of erotic and sexual actions.

This second scenario is also much more text based than the first one. The first one sometimes include voice and/or video.

How-to... I think that Lee has gone in greater detail about the "do" and "don't" lists for a "successful" encounter. I will only add or emphasize that being concerned on whatever the partner or partners wants is a must. That is the result of good communication, which many times we do not take the time to share.

One thing that, for me, is a complete turn-off is reading the other person define how I am feeling at a certain time. While I can understand the idea of "I caress your leg and feel your skin reacting to my touch", I can not swallow the "I stand behind you and suddenly, you start feeling a rush of heat starting on your neck and going all the way down to your feet, your eyes showing the lust you feel for my strong pinky finger is overwhelming". I consider the play a creation of two parties, and as such I expect reactions to the actions anyone takes.

On buying sex and prostitution:

First a disclaimer: I have never paid a prostitute to have sex. I believe that has to do with the concept that for me a successful sexual encounter is one in which my partner is fully satisfied. Until recently, I was under the assumption that prostitutes did not really enjoyed the practice of sex.

Over the last few years it came to my mind the idea of hiring a prostitute to see what was all the fuzz about. My whys are more related to the idea of being able to do something that I do not normally do than anything else.

Let's also consider that sex is still a social taboo, going to a prostitute is consider by some people the confirmation of one's inability to get sex thru "normal" means.

Anyway... I am more relationship oriented than casual, although I enjoy a lot a good flirt.

Thank you for your post, Don. I enjoyed reading it. This bit below particularly stood out to me as something that should be highlighted on that list of cyber do's and don'ts. Telling someone else how they feel in text. Telling someone how they feel at all, for that matter, but especially in text during a cybersex roleplay. It's a "don't." I've discovered during my cybertravels that this is a significant part of "cybersex roleplay etiquette 101." A major point for many people. Don't tell someone how they feel, let them do that.
no godmodding and no bunnying.

Attention Whores

Some men do cum and go. And I love them for it. Some men will intentionally forgo a climax, because while what they want is to have sex with you, they also want to keep your attention for much longer than a cybersex quickie. Some will be quite forthright about this and some will be more evasive, passive and tricky about it. "Attention whore" is a meme for a reason. A lot of people crave attention more than the physical release of an orgasm.

Cue comments about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in an Immersionist world or, conversely, the old saying about men paying prostitutes to leave.

Cut Bait

Male: Hi. How R U tonight?
Female: Good thank you. And you?
Male: Great. Actually I should be going to bed already
Male: it's 1:45 am here
Female: Well goodnight then. Female smiles.
Male: but i don't quite feel like it yet
Male: how about you? what are you looking for tonight?

Female answers.

Male: My kind a gal then
Male: my connection is really slow tonight,
Male: so, would you fancy a quickie?
Male: you know any good places here, i'm kind of a newcomer in this place
Female: I know lots of good places. What do you like?
Male: well, sex

Male starts poseball and position hopping, running through animations.

Male: This animation is really crap.
Female: My sense is that you are really pretty new at this and what you want is someone to help you get started and test the poseballs. I don't mean to be rude, I'm just being straight with you.
Male: Yep. No, you're not rude.
Female: Okay, then let's do this a little differently. I'll help you out and show you the basics just for educational purposes and to get you started, okay? I'm going to take you to a bed somewhere else. It will be easier. More possibilities in one place. I'm just going to do it for a few minutes to help you out. Understand?
Male: Yep. I'm all yours baby. Nice tits, btw. Nice ass too. You like my cock?
Female: Gee, thanks. It's great. Just focus on the menu and the positions and see what you like. You like these animations any better?
Male: Yes.
Female: This may give you have some idea of how this works so when you hook up with the next chick you can actually get straight to the sex with her.
Male: I've fucked a few already in SL.

Who's turned on? Show of hands...or posts? Anyone?

Who thinks the "Female" should have cut and run at "Well, goodnight then"? Or just shut up and fucked him if not cutting and running?

Attached, Committed, Free & Clear or in the Grey Zone

Another observation. I see a lot of men who are married, partnered, collared or have a Mistress (or in some cases all of the above), all of which is clearly stated (broadcasted even) more than once in their profile, often with a sentimental declaration of love, loyalty and devotion... on their own and on the loose in sex sims. This information, to me, when I'm in Second Life on my sex account for the purpose of sex and trawling profiles, tells me not to approach these people. They are not available for sex, right? So I usually glide on by. What I have noticed, either because these people have contacted me or in an occasional moment of mischief when I have contacted them, that they are engaging in either a bit of false or misguided advertising. There's a lot more to be said on that subject, but I'm just going to leave it there for a moment.

Account Management: Friends List, Pings, Busy Status & Calling Cards

In all fairness to the "Hi" and "kisses" guys who repeat that in my chatbox over and over...and since I mentioned account management...I frequently have to uncheck a lot of boxes or just give out calling cards so I can do anything in Second Life on my sex account and the "Hi" and "kiss" IMs are often actually "pings" to check to see if I'm online and hiding.

Angel & Tristan

There is a guy in Second Life, I'm going to just call him, "Angel," who has Second Life game big time, which would explain why he is almost never alone and usually surrounded by young, often-charming, always-voicing women in expensive skins and sexy outfits. You know how people put their friends in their Second Life picks tab? He's in dozens of them. He's been at this awhile and has clearly been fine-tuning his act. It's not perfect. I could make some criticisms about the occasional intrusion of his real life into his fantasy life, and some other things as well, but on the Second Life scale, it's pretty damn good. He's smooth and he's virtually agile. He does romance as a charming and gracious gentleman dancing on the ballroom floor with as much ease and skill as he does nasty kink in leather and chains. And he can be a very, very naughty boy. He's eloquent in text and he has a voice like a jazz station DJ. He actually does several voices...he does impressions and sings. Well. I kid you not. I met him when I wandered into a BDSM sim and he was doing his act in Local Chat. I hit on him and then, if you can believe this (and going to the repeats and referrals part of the cybersex sales cycle) introduced him to a couple of my friends. Bonus! He creates quite a contrast to Joe Wannafucker and boy, does he know it. Confidence from experience. Sexy stuff.

My friend Tristan is pretty smooth too. He got me to do some things I did not originally set out to do...and like it. I met him through an introduction and I've since introduced him to several women. Do not ignore the repeats and referrals part of the cybersex cycle!

Alt Accounts & Secret Lives...and Risks

One story, certainly not indicative of all or even many, just one that stood out in my mind as a unique and unpleasant experience....

In another world and on another forum a man became aware of both my account identities. He became obsessed with my duality and asked me, among other things, to log into the forum as my sex alt and tell everyone that he was the best sex I'd ever had. I declined. Not long after that, and for largely unrelated reasons, he posted some forum posts vaguely threatening to out my alt in messages that were designed so that only I would be likely to see what he really meant. I didn't like the control that gave him, so I outted myself. To say he was shocked by my response would be putting it mildly.

Dehumanizing Avatar Operators

Lum's point about some Joe Wannafuckers seeing sex in SL as not "a mutual exercise, but as a computer-assisted masturbation, primarily because they do not see others within SL as real, but as constructs within a computer game," truly does extend to everyone. They aren't just dehumanizing the woman operating the avatar, they're dehumanizing other men operating avatars. I get asked by men all the time to TP them to where I am so they can watch me with the guy I'm with or to abandon the guy mid-dance or mid-stroke or to do something to him or to include the new guy in an MMF or what-have-you. You could chalk it up to horny, rude, competitive, testosterone-driven bullshit, and I'm sure quite a lot of it is, but I think it also falls under Lum's gender-neutral assessment that to some people we are all just "constructs within a computer game."

Profiles: Likes & Dislikes

There is a fine line. There's a fine line between communicating likes and dislikes and identifying yourself as one of the stereotypical Second Life asshats. The thing is, a woman with a profile like that one Orfeu has described has been effective and efficient in her profile communication choices. She's alerted Orfeu to the fact that they are not compatible right off the bat. On some level, Orfeu is probably thanking her for that as he quietly moves on and she is none the wiser. Win-win.

Sometimes it's a qualitative nuance, if you will. There's a big difference in tone between a woman with a profile that seems to calmly and proactively state that she prefers interacting with men as invested in Second Life roleplay as she is, which she sees demonstrated through quality skins, shapes and clothes as well as complete words and sentences and a woman who seems to be stamping her feet in a demanding fit of princess pique with her litany of "fixes" before the man has even said hello.

Orfeu Miles said: ↑
I agree Cody...the profile gives people a chance to show themselves somewhat....There are prolly loads of AV's out there who see that Entitlement Princess stuff, and just eat it up.
I aint one of them....so I guess....both parties have saved themselves some time.

I have spent more than a few evenings, where, in a crowded place...I have sat and read 40 or 50 profiles...and never found anyone I was interested in approaching.

I offer this, as a corrective to the view that all Males, wander round the grid with their Freenis hanging in the wind propositioning anything in a prim skirt.
These screwbies exist of course...but it gets a little monotonous reading these never ending litanies of complaint, about how useless men are...how retarded....autistic...neanderthal etc etc. ;)

And from Lum:
My profile is EXTREMELY standoffish. Let me show you:
Why I do this is simple. I use it as a filter. As a quick guess, I have no interest in talking to, oh, 66% of the population of SL. (And that is generous.)

So, if you do read my profile, and see that I dislike text-speak and gesture-spamming and am slightly self-deprecating, this may or may not discourage you from IMing me.
If you IM me anyway with "how r u" I will assume one of the following:

- That you have not bothered to read my profile
- That you have read my profile and this is your idea of being cute.
In either instance, it is likely you fall into that 66%. Thus - filters.

Again, quality and tone. Balance even. Yours has filters, but retains the welcoming charm. No, really.

Women Can Be Asshats Too

And under the category of women can be asshats too...

I'm wandering through a new-to-me public sim. Just exploring on my own. Using my Lee account. Not bothering a little clump of people some meters away from me. Admiring the Moorish architecture. Around the corner and upstairs from this group of people who clearly know each other and are in the middle of a conversation I'm paying little attention to in Local Chat.

Then someone I have never met or spoken to in my life shouts...

JD shouts: leehere come here

It's a bit difficult in text, isn't it? Voice tone can make all the difference, or as Ishtara points out, descriptive text. So can your own mood and temperament. In this case, it immediately raised my hackles.

I told her I wasn't a dog.

At least she had a sense of humor.

kM: but ladies i am not spy from there
kM: lol
kM: i am new to both places
JD: ok kM
JD: and trust me u cant find better people then us
iA: lee there is new too
LeeHere Absent: Yep
iA: so we will welcome her in a while
JD: ohhh where did she come from
JD: kM u come whwen there are lots of peple u will love this laggy place
iA: u can h t copy and pasted for future refrance
JD: lol
iA: yes we do privide group chat for fast tps and chats
JD: and if u get lost plz start the group chat
JD shouts: leehere come here
LeeHere Absent: Wow.
LeeHere Absent: I'm a human, not a puppy. ;p
JD: for everythign else there is master card
LeeHere Absent: Priceless.

Some feedback from my friend, Orfeu Miles:

Some pertinent points.
Never tried to pick up a chick at Franks/Bogarts etc etc....but have had many charming dates there....not all of which ended carnally. Sometimes Romance is its own buzz...sometimes the overture is better than the opera. :)( I would cite Fidelio by Beethoven which has 4 overtures all better than the opera)
I very rarely ask the ASL question....I dont expect an honest answer so why ask the question ?
The only exceptions to this, are cues given, that this is an important deal to the avi I am speaking to. Perhaps they have read my profile...and get that I am the kind, who doesn't have a big wall up between 1st and 2nd lives...and they wanna explore that perspective for a while.
If a Female Avi's profile is full of "Dont talk to me in phone-text ( I never do)...Have a presentable Avi ( I always have, from day5)...Do this...dont do that...do this a lot...NEVER do that...then...um....I have you pegged as a Female Rainman/Entitlement Princess. This is a thin line we are walking here, and Douche-baggery is not gender specific.
My own totally subjective ...non-researched conclusion...is that sl is FULL of people with mental-health problems...this stirs my compassion...but not my desire to wanna get to know you better. :mofic:
Oh and Lee...you definitely have a different perspective from Lillie...its almost as though you actually LIKE people....even...gasps...Male People.;)
